The Syrian diplomats in Libya have been given a 72-hour deadline to leave the country. This move comes after they tried to take over the embassy from the Syrian National Council, SNC. Libya was the first country to recognise the SNC as the legitimate government of Syria.
The Syrian embassy was attacked by protestors on February 4. They who hoisted the Free Syrian Flag and also took over the embassy.
A SNC official told The Tripoli Post that they have the right to take over the embassy as the NTC has already recognised the SNC.
The Libyan foreign ministry has said that the move to expel the Syrian Charge d' Affaires and the embassy staff is aimed to show solidarity with the Syrian people and to denounce the brutal crackdown by the security forces.
He also added that the Libyan people know the value of freedom and they can only stand with oppressed peoples.
